Showtime announced yesterday that a new slate of artists will perform “Little Boxes,” the title theme for its popular half-hour Weeds, when the show returns for a fifteen-episode third season August 13.
Covering Malvina Reynolds’ 1962 melody this season are:
- Joan Baez
- Donovan
- Michael Franti (late of Spearhead)
- The Individuals (last heard on the show with “Let a Thug Smoke”)
- Angelique Kidjo
- Kinky
- Man Man
- Persephone’s Bees
- The Shins
- Billy Bob Thornton
- and Randy Newman, whose version will open the third season in about five weeks. …
In other Weeds news, another familiar face will be joining the gang. As previously reported, Matthew Modine and Mary-Kate Olsen will appear in season 3. Joining them will be Carrie Fisher. …
With new episodes just weeks away, Showtime has begun heavily promoting the show’s return. In some on-air ads, the show is bundled with its scheduling partner Californication, starring David Duchovny. The new show debuts Monday, August 13 at 10:30 p.m./ET, following the season premiere of Weeds. The previews are becoming more elaborate: scenes and clips from the new season are mixed with cast and crew interviews about the upcoming storylines.
