In Internet, News, Predictions on January 20, 2009 by thetvmanifesto Tagged: Internet, News
Lots of milestones are being celebrated and observed in connection with today’s transition of power. But one of the most striking is the increasing importance of streaming live news events, as we saw last November on Election Day. Live news, once the domain of broadcast and cable networks, is quickly migrating to the web.
Mashable has a snapshot of statistics from this morning’s main event. The St. Petersburg Times considers that today may have been one of our last shared TV events as a nation, but have the technically-inclined already migrated to their portable screens? In offices and on college campuses, computers are certainly more ubiquitous than television sets, and this is only the beginning of a trend.
What will this mean for the networks and cable? Will this shift finally convince them to take Internet distribution by the horns? Or will they continue to be left behind, like their journalistic colleagues in print media?

In Big Brother, Gretchen Massey, House Calls, Internet on February 12, 2008 by thetvmanifesto
In case you hadn’t heard, the so-bad-it’s-occasionally-good Big Brother Internet talk show, House Calls, returns this season with host Gretchen Massey. Joining her as co-host this year is BB8 winner “Evel” Dick, who is sure to have plenty to say about this crop of houseguests and their woes. Come to think of it, Dick and Daniele would’ve been a good pair, since they basically won last season together.
Look for House Calls to return as early as tomorrow on CBS.com.

In American Gladiators, CNBC, Dan Abrams, Hogan Knows Best, Hulk Hogan, Internet, Joe Scarborough, Live with Dan Abrams, MSNBC, MTV, Meet the Press, Morning Joe, NBC, Talk Shows, The Tim Russert Show, Tom Green on October 3, 2007 by thetvmanifesto
- Last week, MSNBC made two summer programming experiments a permanent part of its schedule. Joe Scarborough’s Morning Joe airs 6-9a/5-8c weekdays. Dan Abrams steps down as GM at the news net to anchor the 9p/8c program Live with Dan Abrams, Monday-Thursday. These changes went into effect on a trial basis this summer following the scandalized ouster of former morning personality Don Imus.
- Also, MSNBC has poached The Tim Russert Show, the ten-year-old weekend interview hour hosted by the Meet the Press moderator, from CNBC. Effective this weekend, new episodes of Russert premiere Saturdays at 12p/11c. Repeats will run Saturdays at 6p/5c, overnight at 2a/1c, and again Sundays at 12p/11c.
- Former MTV personality Tom Green is bringing his act back to TV. Green is syndicating his nightly Internet talk show through Lionsgate subsidiary Debmar-Mercury for a test run beginning in January. If the experiment is successful, the show could see national distribution next fall.
- Wrestler and Hogan Knows Best topliner Hulk Hogan has signed up to host NBC’s revival of American Gladiators, due at midseason.

In Internet, TV Bigshot on October 1, 2007 by thetvmanifesto
It takes all the fun out of this online fantasy-football style fall season showdown when the site only updates scores once a week and cannot reliably be counted on to function at any given time. TV Bigshot is down right now; a scoring update occurred yesterday (supposedly), but there’s no way for me to know how I’m doing, because the homepage won’t load. Sigh.

In ABC, AOL, Fox, Internet, NBC on September 22, 2007 by thetvmanifesto
It was a busy week for three of the Big Four networks, as they lined up new electronic distribution deals for the new fall season.
- ABC will partner with AOL Video to find new online viewers for its primetime product. New episodes of ABC shows will be available at video.aol.com the day after they air in primetime. ABC.com on AOL will coexist with ABC’s own high definition broadband player.
- NBC has partnered with Amazon Unbox after recently deciding not to reup with iTunes.
- Fox will make it season and series premieres available for free download on iTunes following their initial broadcasts.

In Bravo, Internet, TV Bigshot on September 20, 2007 by thetvmanifesto
UPDATED Friday 11 a.m./ET It’s back up now.
UPDATED 9 p.m./ET Apparently, the game is more popular than Bravo and TWoP anticipated, because the whole site is down for a server upgrade. A placeholder promises the game will be back online “soon.”
TV Bigshot, the fantasy football-style TV season game from Bravo-owned Television Without Pity, began in earnest this week. There’s a $100,000 grand prize as well as smaller prizes to be awarded monthly.
I’ve made my picks; you can check out my network and follow its progress, if you’re so inclined. And if you think I made poor choices (or just want to play along), feel free to sign up yourself and get in the game.

In Big Brother, Big Brother: After Dark, CBS, House Calls, Internet, Julie Chen, Talk Shows, The Early Show on September 18, 2007 by tvsurfergrrl
After Dark is over, but in its memory I offer the highlights of the live final show of Big Brother 8 in headlines style:
- By a vote of 5-2, Dick is the winner of Big Brother 8 and the $500,000 prize
- Eric was finally revealed to his fellow houseguests as America’s Player
- Dick’s daughter and partner in the house, Daniele, was the runner up and won $50,000.
Catch the Donatos’ interview with Julie Chen tomorrow morning on The Early Show on CBS. You can also catch the last of the Big Brother fever on House Calls: The Big Brother Talk Show webcast live at 1p/12c on CBS.com.

In Broadband, Edward Zwick, Internet, Marshall Herskovitz, My So-Called Life, MySpace, Quarterlife, thirtysomething on September 13, 2007 by thetvmanifesto
Veteran TV producers Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick, whose credits include thirtysomething and My So-Called Life, among others, are premiering their new Internet series Quarterlife on MySpace TV.
The show is “about young people struggling to find their way after college,” according to the New York Times article, which includes a trailer for the project, premiering November 11 on MySpace.
The show will have “network-caliber” writers, directors and crew and will be available all over the Internet after episodes premiere on MySpace.

In Big Brother, Big Brother: After Dark, CBS, Internet, Primetime Emmys, ShoToo on September 9, 2007 by thetvmanifesto
With the Big Brother house down to the final four, the season is definitely winding down. Here’s a reminder of what’s coming up in the primetime shows over the next few weeks:
- Tonight, the CBS show will feature an HoH competition as well as nominations
- It’s a special live show Tuesday, in which the veto ceremony immediately precedes an eviction
- Thursday, it’s another live show. This time, a final Head of Household is crowned and will singlehandedly evict a houseguest, leaving America with its final two
- Next Sunday, an episode is scheduled to air up against the Primetime Emmys
- And Tuesday, Sept. 18, is the live finale, in which a jury of evicted houseguests returns to decide the winner of $500,000
According to CBS.com, America will be casting Eric’s vote for the winner come the 18th. After Dark, which has gotten far less interesting now that there’s virtually no one in the house, continues nightly on ShoToo.
