‘Early Show’ blended format to end

In CBS, The Chenbot on July 9, 2007 at 8:19 am

Come January, some of us will be getting an extra dose of the Chenbot with our cereal. CBS has announced that it will end The Early Show‘s blended format as of January 7.

The blended format for America’s also-ran morning show allowed local CBS affiliates (such as WHNT-TV Huntsville, my CBS station) to split the 7 a.m. hour of the show between local news and the national feed of The Early Show, creating headaches, confusion and a lack of flexibility at the network level.

CBS News and Sports President Sean McManus wants to make Early more competitive in the morning show wars, which have seen a hotly contested battle for first place between Today and Good Morning America in recent years.

When the blended format ends at the beginning of 2008, most CBS affiliates will be required to carry the two-hour broadcast of The Early Show in its entirety, according to this TV Week article.
