A hot ‘Mess’ for BET

In Uncategorized on July 10, 2007 at 9:52 am

On the heels of a glowing profile in yesterday’s New York Times and just as it begins to roll out the most ambitious slate of new programming in its nearly three decades on the air, BET faces trouble from advertisers and some members of the black community.

State Farm Insurance and Home Depot have pulled advertising from the cabler’s upcoming reality series Hot Ghetto Mess, based on the website of the same name. The video highlights show aims to “encourage black America to question its community standards”; critics say the show and the site “perpetuate negative black stereotypes” and bemoan BET’s efforts to catch up to VH1, which has had recent success with shows like I Love New York and Charm School.

Hot Ghetto Mess is set to premiere on BET Wednesday, July 25 at 10:30 p.m./ET.
