Tammy Faye remembered on WE

In Uncategorized on July 23, 2007 at 10:30 pm

Tammy Faye Messner, a TV icon since the PTL Club in the 1980s best known in recent years for spending a season in The Surreal Life house with porn star Ron Jeremy, died this weekend of colon cancer at the age of 65. Her last public appearance was an interview on last Thursday’s Larry King Live.

WE tv  has scheduled a “tribute presentation” of its 2005 documentary “Tammy Faye: Death Defying” for Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m./ET, encoring at 12 a.m./ET. The 90-minute documentary was taped over a six-month period in 2004, during one of Messner’s earlier bouts with cancer.

Tammy Faye was a truly enduring television icon, though her career path was a bit abnormal. Erstwhile orange juice spokeswoman Anita Bryant, for instance, wasn’t given a second (or third) chance by the American public (though she apparently does have a tribute MySpace).

Mourners and well-wishers crashed her official website after her death was announced Saturday evening; access to the site has since been restored.

Here’s a tribute from the Washington Post.
