REALITY | Hey, look! Someone else liked ‘Kid Nation.’

In Reality TV on September 21, 2007 at 9:01 am

An insightful analysis from Salon does eventually find a few things to criticize, but it’s one of few mostly positive assessments of the new show I’ve run across. Most critics seemed inclined to hate it before it began.

Granting the premise that opinion is subjective, I have to wonder why. The media has certainly already raised plenty of questions about the show, but the controversy surrounding what adults involved in the production may or may not have done takes away from what these 40 kids were able to accomplish. The ends don’t justify the means, but can’t we (and the participants) enjoy the ends while we’re sorting out solutions for the means?

It probably didn’t help critics’ attitudes that CBS didn’t provide advance screeners for review, instead forcing them to watch Kid Nation‘s premiere on television, like common folk. The horror!
