IDOL VIRGIN | D is for Dallas

In Idol Virgin on January 28, 2010 at 11:50 am

And D is also the letter grade I’d give most of these ‘singers.’

Guest judge Neil Patrick Harris knew how to be critical of the performances, and wasn’t afraid to. Helping him out, however, was the lingering motif that it’s painfully clear when these people are terrible. There’s precious little in the way of raw talent, at least that the editing is allowing us to see. And two nights of setting up fake conflict between members of the regular panel and their celebrity guests has been the opposite of compelling. I want to see some real action. I was told there’d be a singing competition.

I don’t understand what I’m supposed to be doing with these treacly back stories, so for the moment I’m dismissing them. Many of these people will barely be seen again once the contest is pared down to a manageable number, right? I have appreciated the entertainment presence of some of the golden ticket recipients. It says something serious when they are legitimately confident and see no need to employ gaud or gimmick to catch a judge’s eye.

Joe Jonas was also there. This brings me to a brief assessment of the guest judge situation. Since Ellen had not signed on when auditions began, it feels like they were considering this guest judge format for the entire season. There are some standouts that I hope remain in the rotation as needed, with Simon’s looming departure. Just two more audition episodes separate us from Hollywood Week, which I fear lasts longer than a week.
